If you long to experience camping in Tenerife, enjoying the great outdoors and its unique landscapes, this guide is for you. After several visits to the Canary Islands, on some occasions we opted to camp in order to delight in the starry sky and discover the island from a different perspective.

In addition to natural areas where you are allowed to set up your tent, there are private campgrounds with a wide variety of facilities. It is essential to remember that you can only camp in authorized areas, as free camping is prohibited and you could receive a fine. Likewise, to access these places you will need to rent a car or a motorhome in Tenerife, depending on your preferences.

Camping in Tenerife is undoubtedly one of the most attractive options to accommodate yourself in Tenerife. Therefore, in this guide we explain everything you need to know about the campgrounds in Tenerife.

Best Campgrounds in Tenerife

In Tenerife there are clearly delimited and signposted outdoor areas where camping is allowed. In these spaces you can set up a tent or park a motorhome, as well as any other vehicle equipped for overnight stays. It is important to know that the stay in each area is limited to 7 consecutive days and requires a prior reservation, which you must manage through this link at least 15 days in advance. Additionally, from the reservations website you can check the number of available spots in each Tenerife campground area.

All the camping areas in Tenerife are located next to a recreational area that has bathrooms, barbecue areas, water fountains, and other amenities. However, access to these areas is generally allowed until 7:00 p.m. in winter and until 9:00 p.m. in summer. After these hours, remaining in the recreational area will only be possible if you have a permit to overnight.

Depending on the location you choose to camp, you will be closer to different points of interest in Tenerife. Therefore, review the various camping options and their locations, and select the one that best fits your route around the island.

Wild Camping in Tenerife: Regulations and Possibilities

The regulations state that only in authorized areas, whether designated camping zones or campgrounds, is it allowed to set up a tent or overnight in a motorhome or other vehicle. In these spaces, a maximum of 7 consecutive nights is allowed, always with a prior reservation.

However, wild camping is permitted on hiking routes, where no motorized vehicle is available. In this case, you are allowed to set up a single tent or hut for a maximum of 24 hours, provided you have the corresponding authorization, which can be obtained at this website. The setup must be done without obstructing passage or endangering the local flora and fauna.

The Best Time to Camp in Tenerife: Weather and Practical Tips

Tenerife is an ideal destination for camping year-round, thanks to its pleasant temperatures in any season. Although some campgrounds may close temporarily, the designated camping areas are usually open at all times.

Keep in mind that during peak season, summer, weekends, or holidays, it can be more challenging to find a spot, especially if you are traveling in a motorhome. In our experience, even camping in winter (for example, in January) turned out to be very comfortable, as the nighttime temperatures, although cool, do not prevent you from enjoying nature.

What You Need for a Camping Adventure in Tenerife

To begin your adventure, the first thing is to ensure you have the proper permit or reservation for your spot.

In addition, you will need a tent, motorhome, or a vehicle suitable for overnight stays. Do not forget to bring warm clothing for the night, as although the day may be warm, it cools down after sunset. It is essential to have enough water and food, since in many camping areas there is no access to treated water.

Finally, make sure your mobile phone is fully charged, as, except in paid campgrounds, you will not have electricity.

Camping in Tenerife has its advantages and disadvantages: in designated camping areas you will have fewer comforts, whereas in a paid campground you will enjoy facilities similar to those of a hotel, but with the bonus of being in direct contact with nature.
