Arona is the southernmost municipality of Tenerife and the most visited, especially by tourists who prefer a beach setting. Additionally, it is an area full of leisure options, accommodations, restaurants, nightclubs, and plenty of entertainment, as it is home to the popular towns of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.

We have explored and stayed in Arona, Tenerife multiple times when we wanted to enjoy the attractions of South Tenerife and participate in various water activities. Therefore, I can affirm that it is a very attractive and beautiful municipality, mainly because it was here where we watched wild whales and dolphins for the first time.

If you want more information, in this Tenerife guide, I will detail everything you should see in Arona, as well as the different activities you can do.

Las Americas Beach Arona

1. Playa de Las Américas, one of the most popular places in Arona, Tenerife

Playa de Las Américas is one of the most visited destinations in Arona and also one of the liveliest.

If you visit this area of Arona, Tenerife during the day, you can enjoy the sun and swim at Playa Las Vistas and Playa El Camisón, which are the two most popular beaches to visit in Playa de Las Américas. You can also go shopping on the Golden Mile or engage in a water sport, such as surfing or snorkeling.

At night, the atmosphere changes completely, becoming much more festive. I suggest enjoying the light, color, music, and water show at the Fountain Las Américas, as well as visiting the Papagayo Beach Club, recognized as one of the top nightclubs in Tenerife.

Undoubtedly, it is one of the most vibrant areas of Arona, Tenerife, but if you choose to stay in one of the hotels in Las Américas, I guarantee you can relax without any issues.

Los cristianos Arona

2. Los Cristianos: A Must-Visit Tourist Destination in Arona

Los Cristianos is another tourist area in Arona, Tenerife. In fact, it is adjacent to Playa de Las Américas, so the atmosphere is very similar.

Among the numerous attractions in Los Cristianos, the Playa de Los Cristianos and the Los Cristianos Market stand out. However, without a doubt, the best thing you can do in this area is to participate in a whale and dolphin watching tour. This is one of our favorite activities, as we love the experience of watching cetaceans swimming freely.

You also have the option to book a snorkeling tour, which will allow you to appreciate the rich marine flora and fauna of Tenerife’s seabed. Additionally, with some luck, you might even see sea turtles and dolphins.

Another activity in Arona is partying in Los Cristianos, as the nightlife here is as lively as in Playa Las Américas. In this case, I suggest visiting the Punta Cana Disco Los Cristianos and spending the night at one of the best hotels in Los Cristianos.

Malpaís de la Rasca

3. Malpaís de la Rasca: A Must-Visit Natural Reserve in Arona, Tenerife

Malpaís de la Rasca is another must-see place to visit in Arona, Tenerife. This area is a Special Natural Reserve that offers impressive volcanic landscapes and beautiful, secluded coves.

The only way to explore Malpaís de la Rasca is on foot, following a circular route that is quite accessible due to its low elevation change. The hike starts before the entrance to Palm-Mar, where you will see a sign indicating the beginning of the trail. Vehicle access is not allowed, so you must park your car just before the sign and continue on foot.

During this hike, you can appreciate a volcanic environment that seems straight out of a science fiction movie. Additionally, this place is home to several animal and plant species that are threatened or endangered, such as the Canarian incense. Playa de las Vistas is one of the most outstanding beaches to visit in Arona. Located in Playa Las Américas, it is distinguished by its fine, golden sand and its calm, crystal-clear waters, making it one of the best beaches in Tenerife.

A special feature of this beach is the presence of a breakwater, which significantly softens the waves and reduces currents, making it a very safe place to enjoy with children. However, it is essential to maintain constant supervision, especially if children cannot swim.

At Playa de las Vistas, you also have services such as hammock and umbrella rentals, showers, bathrooms, volleyball nets, and a lifeguard station. Additionally, it has ramps and walkways for people with reduced mobility, ensuring that everyone can enjoy this beach in Arona, Tenerife.

Dolphins Arona

5. Whale and Dolphin Watching: A Unique Experience in Arona, Tenerife

Whale and dolphin watching is, without a doubt, one of the best activities in Arona, South Tenerife. In fact, this is one of our favorite experiences.

If you want to enjoy this activity, I suggest taking this tour that departs from the port of Los Cristianos. The trip lasts two hours and includes a stop so you can take a swim in the open sea or practice snorkeling.

You can take this tour at any time of the year, as the Canary waters offer ideal conditions for numerous cetacean species, such as dolphins and pilot whales, to reside permanently. It is important to note that these are wild animals living freely, so each tour is unique, and no company can guarantee which species you will see or the number of individuals. However, if you are not lucky on the day you take the tour, I recommend that you could repeat it at no additional cost.

For more information about this activity, you can consult our guide on whale and dolphin watching in Tenerife, as there are other places on the island from where boats also depart in search of cetaceans.

Where to Stay in Arona, Tenerife: The Best Accommodation Options

In Arona, Tenerife, you will find a wide variety of accommodation options because it is a highly touristy area with an extensive offer. Additionally, I consider it one of the best places to stay in Tenerife, as most of the tours around Tenerife include pickup from the hotels in Arona, making it an ideal starting point to explore the rest of the island.

Our preferred accommodation is the Regency Country Club, recognized as one of the best hotels in Playa de Las Américas. We stayed there once and enjoyed spacious, bright, and very clean rooms, as well as well-maintained facilities. If you are looking for a more economical option, I recommend the Catalonia Oro Negro, which offers excellent value for money and a privileged location, being one of the cheapest hotels in Tenerife that I recommend.

Another excellent alternative is the Sol Arona Tenerife, one of the best hotels in Los Cristianos. The highlight of this hotel is that some of its rooms have balconies or terraces with sea views. Additionally, it is an ideal place to stay whether you are a couple, family, or with friends.

If your intention is to stay in an apartment because you want more freedom and to reduce food expenses, I suggest the Paloma Beach Apartments. We stayed there once, and the experience was very positive. Additionally, it is considered one of the best apartments in Los Cristianos. If, on the other hand, you are looking for apartments in the Playa las Américas area, our favorite is the KN Aparthotel Columbus.

As you can see, there are numerous accommodation options, so I am sure you will find a hotel or apartment that suits your needs and travel style. However, if you plan to travel during the high season, book one of the hotels in Arona in advance, as it is a very touristy and popular area.

Where to Eat in Arona: The Best Gastronomic Options

In Arona, Tenerife, you will find a wide variety of gastronomic options. However, I want to tell you in advance that our favorite restaurants are El Ventorrillo, located in Los Cristianos, and Taberna del Tío Martín, in the Las Américas area.

El Ventorrillo is a very cozy restaurant where you can enjoy a wide variety of typical Spanish dishes. I especially recommend trying the octopus rejo, one of its standout dishes. On the other hand, Taberna del Tío Martín is a tavern-style restaurant where you can eat tapas-style specialties from different autonomous communities of Spain, including some typical Canarian dishes.

If you are looking for a guachinche to taste authentic Canarian cuisine, I suggest Guachinche La Fuente. We discovered this restaurant by chance and enjoyed very friendly and family-like service, as well as excellent dishes. The only drawback is that you need a car to get there. So, if you do not have a vehicle, I recommend visiting El Pincho or Mesón Las Lanzas, where you will also find an excellent value for money.
